ProtoPixel inside La Casa de la Luz

La Casa de la Luz is a Simon unique space located in Madrid aimed to be the home of the new light, of which ProtoPixel had the honor to be part. In this venue, people can attend conferences, events, and training sessions, or enjoy an experiential environment in which to understand how light can transform environments and moods, change perceptions and emotions and, ultimately, change our lives.

ProtoPixel, as Simon's technology partner, has carried out the design and digitization of all the lighting in La Casa de la Luz to create a dynamic, connective, and experiential space. Making use of the complete ProtoPixel platform, the project has focused on putting light in space and time.

Orchestrating light

With the ProtoPixel Create Software, all the effects have been designed for the more than 100,000 points of light and the 36 different environments the space is composed of.

All the digital lighting in La Casa de la Luz is controllable through the ProtoPixel Spaces App: from simple actions such as turning the lights on and off upon arrival to the passage of a full day in the basement indoor garden. The Spaces App also makes content dynamization for the space accessible. Any new design, effect, or functionality of physical objects can be created, saved, and used.

The Cloud layer also makes the control of the facility remotely accessible from anywhere in the world: Add new content? Make repairs? Control the lighting points on time for an event? Possible thanks to the remote control.

Once the digital part is deployed, the physical part becomes important. Without the devices, we could not deploy all this light content to reality. We transfer the software designs to the plane of reality through the different devices installed throughout the space. ProtoPixel Node, which acts as the brain of the installation, is in charge of storing Create's designs and sending information to the installed controllers that are connected to the light points scattered throughout the space.

"We wanted to be able to control each luminaire, the color, and intensity of each pixel of each led strip"

The light, the moods, and their purposes

In La Casa de la Luz we find two very different concepts on each floor:

The first floor is characterized by the need for functional light: it is a working and physical product display area. Therefore, we focused on automating the lighting control and created an experience where ease of use is the main intention. As it is a functional floor that houses general areas, work areas, and meeting rooms, the system is focused on providing flexibility so that the lighting can adapt to the day-to-day life of the workers.

On the other hand, we enter a more experiential world on the second floor, where light becomes emotion. We focus on recreating light in the main spaces of our homes. Starting the tour in the bedroom we see the complete simulation from waking up to going to bed. The recreation of sunrise says good morning and lights out ends the day.

We move to the living room which presents light composed of warm tones that recreate the cozy atmosphere of this common space. We continue to the office, where white light stands out, work light, focused on people's performance and well-being. The interior garden is an example of biomimicry through the use of light. A complete circadian cycle is achieved by simulating the natural light that keeps the plants in their most optimal condition and makes the presence of nature fit with the surrounding elements.

Finally, we find the auditorium, where light is transformed into a communicating element. The environment can change according to the tone of the event and the lights manage to connect with the emotions of the people to make the message that one wants to convey remain with the viewer.

La Casa de la Luz is a space that adapts perfectly to people's needs. It is a space where light becomes an element of communication, health, public engagement, and emotional transmission. And with ProtoPixel technology we managed to put the light in space and time.

I strongly believe in the potential of design within the company to humanize it and generate value. Design integrates, in a natural way, creativity in people and a vision of the future.

Integration with Simon switches

Integrating the switches with ProtoPixel technology makes it possible to control the general switching on and off, thus representing the tangible control that each space has. In this way, ProtoPixel offers us the possibility of modifying the moods by adapting them to our needs.Through integration with Simon 100 switches, ProtoPixel makes it possible to link interactions as simple as the general switching on and off of the entire building to the total transformation of the building. All at the click of a button. Each space has 4 physical switches linked to an action either to turn off or enter an activity (presentation mode, video mode, turn everything on at 100%, and others). This integration allows at any time any switch that is configured to change mode without re-wiring which is more flexible and allows you to modify the behavior depending on the event or situation.

It is a project where light is the protagonist and we have used the most innovative technology to project our vision of light.
